How to Get Rid of Greasy Hair

It is a common misconception that washing and shampooing your hair daily is useful in managing flat, lank, oily hair.

This, however, is not true because washing your lustrous locks too often tends to over stimulate the sebaceous glands.

Thus, it is best to wash your hair twice or thrice weekly. Besides, use a good-quality shampoo formulated for oily hair. Shampoos containing tea tree oil are considered good in this regard.

Though not proven scientifically still, it is believed that diet, too, affects your skin and hair. So, take a healthy diet excluding fried and fatty foods.

Plus, other factors associated with greasy hair include, overactive sebaceous glands, irregular hair washing, hereditary factors, hormonal changes, stress, certain medications, excess humidity, environmental toxins, use of improper hair-care products, etc.

How to Get Rid of Greasy Hair

Here are 8 remedies for getting rid of oily hair.

  1. Vinegar
  2. Lemon Juice
  3. Oatmeal
  4. Essential Oils in Shampoo
  5. Herbal Infusion
  6. Clay Hair Mask
  7. The Powder Trick
  8. Dry Shampoo
  • Mix two tablespoons of vinegar in a cup of distilled water and rinse your hair with this solution to remove product buildup and excess oil from hair and scalp. Besides, you can rinse your hair with a solution of a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in a pint of water. Use it as the final rinse after washing your hair.
  • In case you are bothered by the vinegar smell that may linger, you may use lemon juice. Like vinegar, lemon juice also combats oily hair. You just need to rinse your hair with a cup of water mixed with a quarter cup of lemon juice. Apart from removing oil, lemon juice reduces dandruff and adds shine to your tresses. It works as a natural hair lightener as well. Moreover, you can add two tablespoons of lemon juice and a teaspoon of aloe vera in a quarter cup of shampoo.
  • Oatmeal is considered excellent for absorbing oil from hair and scalp. In addition, it exfoliates the scalp. So, you can generously rub cooked oatmeal on your hair and scalp.
  • Mix 10 drops each of lemongrass essential oil and lemon essential oil in natural, chemical-free shampoo. Furthermore, you may add two drops of tea tree per ounce of shampoo.
  • Add one tablespoon each of freshly chopped rosemary sprigs and mint leaves in two cups of boiling water. Next, squeeze the juice of one lemon in it. Finally, cover the lid and let it steep for about 10 minutes. Strain the solution as use it as a herbal hair rinse for greasy hair.
  • Mix a little water in two to four tablespoons of green clay to form a paste. Rub it onto your scalp, leave for about half an hour and then, rinse it off. You can shampoo your hair after applying this simple hair mask. You only need to apply the clay mask to the hair roots, not ends.
  • This is an interesting quick fix to get rid of greasy hair. You simply need to dip a fluffy makeup brush in a jar of loose powder, shake it off to remove the excess, and then, tap the brush on the greasy spots and oily roots, especially around the hairline. The powder helps absorb excess oil and blends well with the strands. You can use any kind of powder, preferably talcum powder or baby powder.
  • You could also purchase a dry shampoo for oily hair. In case you want a cheaper yet effective alternative, try dusting cornstarch on the greasy areas. Dry oats and even baking soda can be used for this purpose.

Tips to Prevent Greasy Hair

  • When using conditioner after shampooing your hair, prefer to use a light conditioner and apply at the mid-section and ends, that is, away from the scalp and roots. Needless to say, wash your hair thoroughly as conditioners tend to make your hair greasy.
  • Avoid using hair sprays and gels too often as they are likely to cause product buildup and give rise to greasy hair. Interestingly, you may use fresh beer as an alternative to mousse.

Dos and Don’ts

tickDo wash your hair frequently; not daily, though.crossDo not over wash your hair. If you still need to shampoo frequently, consider applying oil or conditioner at the ends before shampooing.
tickDo keep your greasy hair away from your face, especially forehead as it may cause pimples on the forehead. Moreover, your hair may absorb oil from oily skin on the forehead.crossDo not brush your hair too often as it stimulates overproduction of sebum. All you have to do to get rid of oily hair is use gram flour or any flour ( loose powder ) directly on ur scalp and let it sit and absorb the oil for 10 minutes . Then follow it up with regular shampooing with diluted shampoo n conditioner ..
I have sudden freak days where my crown is super oily after wash and can stay that way for days. But doing this fixes the problem immediately .
