How to Get Rid of Dry Skin

Dry skin is characterized by fine lines, cracks, roughness, and flaking or scaling. Dry skin also tends to feel tight rather than soft and supple, particularly after taking a bath or shower indicating removal of natural skin oils.

The most common cause of dry skin is under-active sebaceous glands leading to decreased sebum production. Sebum is an oily substance that forms a protective barrier to keep the skin from losing water through evaporation.

In addition, factors like excessive bathing, scrubbing, frequent hot showers, dehydration, aging, family history, environmental conditions such as desert climate, cold dry air, low humidity, and so on can lead to dry skin.

  1. Almond Oil

    • Massage your skin with sweet almond oil, preferably about half an hour before taking your bath.

    Alternately, you can apply coconut oil, olive oil, or avocado oil on your skin as a moisturizing lotion.

    When dealing with dry skin due to constipation, mix one or two teaspoons of almond oil in a glass of warm milk and drink it.

    Similarly, you can have warm water mixed with a teaspoon of honey and a tablespoon of extra-virgin coconut oil for maintaining beautiful skin and good health

  2. Luxurious Milk Bath

    • Add a few cups of whole milk or pre-mixed milk bath powder in a bathtub filled with warm water.
    • Soak in it for at least 15 to 20 minutes, once a week.

    The fat in milk moisturizes your skin and the lactic acid works as a gentle cleanser. Thus, it will keep your skin hydrated and reduce blemishes, age spots, etc.

    In addition, you can apply ice cold whole milk to your face for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off. Milk cream also works as a natural moisturizer

  3. Sugar Scrub

    • Add a little olive oil to one-half cup of white or brown sugar. You may also add a fragrant essential oil, mint extract, vanilla extract, honey, or the like.
    • Exfoliate your skin with this mixture before taking a bath or shower.

  4. Cocoa Butter

    • Rub cocoa butter on your skin at least once a day. To allow the cocoa butter to penetrate deeper into your skin, wrap areas that are extremely dry with a cloth.

  5. Avocado Face Mask

    • Cut a fresh, ripe avocado into halves and scoop out the pulp from one half.
    • Mash it.
    • Mix in one-quarter cup of organic honey.
    • Rub the mixture on your face and neck and leave it on for 10 minutes.
    • Wash it off with cool water.

    • Mix a few drops of lemon juice in one teaspoon of glycerin.
    • Rub it into areas of dry skin.

    Alternately, you can use aloe vera gel, especially when dealing with itchy skin due to dryness.

Tips to Prevent Dry Skin

  • Limit your bathing to only one bath or shower a day. Avoid frequent steam baths as well.
  • Wash your face with mineral water instead of tap water.
  • Use a mild soap, preferably containing glycerin
  • Use a thick, moisturizing cream or baby oil to seal in moisture on your skin. For best results, apply when your skin is somewhat damp.
