How to Get Rid of Dark Circles

dark circles

Dark circles under your eyes are, in most cases, the result of a genetic predisposition. Dark circles occur when blood vessels under your eyes can be seen through your skin, appearing bluish or reddish-colored. The skin around your eyes is naturally quite thin, which can make dark circles appear even worse.

Factors such as slow circulation (due to lack of sleep), stress, increasing age, fatigue, iron deficiency anemia, dehydration, and seasonal allergies may also contribute to this problem.

The Stretch Test

Dark circles that tend to become darker when the skin under your eyes is stretched are usually attributed to genetic factors, or to aging.

If the color remains the same when stretched, it means that the under-eye circles are probably due to UV rays, or inflamed blood vessels due to allergies, etc.

It Could Be Your Medication!

Certain medications can cause the blood vessels to dilate, thereby making the area under your eyes appear darker. Don’t stop taking your medication without consulting your doctor. Chances are, if your dark circles are due to medication, once your treatment is complete—the dark circles will disappear! But in the meantime, you don’t have to put up with them.

Regardless of the underlying cause, we have several ways to do away with those unsightly dark circles.

How to Get Rid of Dark Circles Under Eyes

8 Ways to Banish Those Dark Circles

  1. Massage
  2. Tea Bags
  3. Ice Cubes
  4. Potato Slices
  5. Tomato Juice
  6. Organic Skin Care Products
  7. Chemical Peels and Skin Bleaching Creams
  8. Laser Therapy

  1. Massage

    • Gently massage the under eye area with almond oil.
    • Repeat twice a day, for at least three to four weeks.

This is one of the most effective natural remedies for dark circles.

  2. Tea Bags

    • Brew tea bags and let them cool.
    • Apply under your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes.

This will increase circulation and constrict the blood vessels. The tannins present in tea can help reduce the discoloration. Green tea, black tea, and chamomile tea bags are highly beneficial in this regard.

  3. Ice Cubes

    • Place several ice cubes in a towel or clean washcloth.
    • Place it on the area under your eyes.
    • Leave on for 10 minutes.

This will help banish dark circles and under eye puffiness caused by enlarged blood vessels. If you run out of ice cubes, you can place a wet paper towel in the freezer for a little while and then use it under your eyes.

  4. Potato Slices

    • Put thin potato slices in the refrigerator to cool.
    • Place them on your eyes for about 20 minutes.
    • Repeat two to three times a day.

Alternately, you can also use cool cucumber slices in the same way.

  5. Tomato Juice

    • Make a paste of equal amounts of tomato juice, crushed mint leaves and rose water.
    • Apply to your skin.
    • Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes.
    • Wash off with clean water.
  6. Organic Skin Care Products

    • Apply according to instructions.
    • Use regularly.

These products contain vitamin K, which is beneficial because it helps fix broken capillaries. You can use these once or twice daily, depending on the product instructions. It is best to opt for eye creams containing vitamin K and retinol.

  7. Chemical Peels and Skin Bleaching Creams

    • Use according to instructions.

Dark circles caused by pigmentation can be reduced by using chemical peels or skin bleaching creams. Choose your skin lightening cream wisely, though, as some creams contain a chemical called hydroquinone, which tends to irritate the skin.

  8. Laser Therapy

You can opt for laser therapy performed by an expert dermatologist to get rid of dark circles caused by excess pigmentation or sun damage.

Tips to Prevent Dark Circles

  • Under eye circles caused by hereditary factors cannot be prevented. Nevertheless, you can apply appropriate makeup to cover them. You can use a concealer that matches your skin tone as it is the best way to hide dark circles.
  • More often than not, individuals with dark circles have extremely thin under eye skin. You can minimize your dark circles by applying a collagen-building cream.
  • Prevent and reduce hormone-induced dark circles and puffiness (usually due to premenstrual water retention) by using natural diuretics, particularly green tea, and eliminating most carbohydrates and salty foods from your diet.
  • Dark circles can appear when you are experiencing nasal congestion as well, due to inflamed blood vessels. You can use a saline nasal spray to clear out sinuses, which in turn can help prevent dark circles or at least make them less noticeable.
